What makes the eco-pod ‘green’?

The ecopod began its life as a shipping container, hence its sturdy, engineered form and tight weather seal. The imbalance of goods traveling from East to West has created a surplus of these in North America, which means that the purchase price is a fraction of the original manufacturing cost – this saving is then passed on to you, the ‘end user’. The process of recycling can itself require a huge amount of energy, although in this case we are working within the parameters of what exists already, so again less energy consumed means both lower production costs and a much smaller ‘carbon footprint’

We wanted to go even further wit h this ethos, so we incorporated rubber flooring recycled from shredded car tires into the design as well as an entire range of off-grid options including a solar-powered refrigerator, XM radio and 12V lighting and wall outlets powered from a roof-mounted solar panel. Even the composting toilet requires very little maintenance and costs a fraction of the traditional septic bed system.

Magnesiacore Inc. is committed to producing an environmentally friendly board and core material. Towards this end, we have implemented a myriad of innovations and processes that reduce the use and consumption of natural resources and fossil fuels, from the source of materials going into magnesiacore, to the final delivery of product to our customers. We believe magnesiacore is a leading source of material friendly to the environment in its many different uses.

Magnesium Oxide (MgO) is the principle component of magnesiacore, making up 60% by weight. MgO is the common molecule of magnesium (Mg), which exists naturally everywhere in the environment. The earth’s crust is 2% magnesium by weight and it is the third most common element suspended in seawater combined with oxygen as MgO.

Magnesium Oxide is produced both as a by-product of various metal and mineral refining and processing steps, and also reclaimed during desalination of seawater. Our main ingredient is therefore produced from other necessary industrial processes.

Natural silicates, our second largest component, making up approximately 30% by weight, is simply unprocessed fine sand that is washed and graded to a size that suits our recipe and does not involve any industrial process to produce.

The two principle components above comprise 90% (by weight) of magnesiacore with the remainder being woven glass fibers, which are generally produced from recycled glass, and small amounts of fine wood particle dust which is a by-product of wood manufacturing and processing industries.

Magnesiacore should be known as made out of natural materials produced by other processes and not resource consuming in its own right. The production of magnesiacore involves mixing a recipe and baking it at relatively low temperatures to produce a low density ceramic-like sponge that exhibits many unique properties in a single versatile product.

The resulting panels are 26% air by volume and fired earth material disposable by crushing and used as compactable clean fill like clay brick chips or a concrete rubble.

ECOsurfaces Flooring

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are evaluated using healthbased specifications. ECOsurfaces flooring also meets the Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS) criteria, the State of Washington standard for indoor air quality and supports the ASTM E2129-01 Sustainability Assessment.

ECOsurfaces flooring is comprised of post-consumer tire rubber and ColorMill EPDM, made from pre-consumer waste and organic fillers. These materials are bound together using a water based polyurethane polymer. The entire product line is produced using a low embodied energy manufacturing process that requires minimal water, avoids heat and reuses in-line scrap to decrease waste. The result is beautiful, environmentally savvy commercial flooring that passes the strictest tests for indoor air quality, low-VOC emissions and is recyclable. ECOsurfaces commercial flooring can assist specifiers by potentially contributing toward earning 9 LEED points.

ECOsurfaces is manufactured by ECORE International, North America’s largest user of scrap tire rubber. Each year ECORE recycles over 80 million pounds of scrap rubber saving over 1 million barrels of oil and keeping over 2,000 trailer loads of discarded tires out of our nation’s landfills. ECOsurfaces is designed to meet stringent criteria required to earn points under 2 out of the 6 categories of LEED. Based on these criteria, ECOsurfaces products can assist specifiers by potentially contributing toward earning 9 LEED points.

SUPERTHERM ecopod interior wall finish



SUPERTHERM ® is a unique single component combination of high performance aliphatic urethanes, elastomeric acrylics, standard acrylics and resin additives in a water borne formula. No co-solvents are present and will dry by evaporation. Due to the unique combination of acrylics and urethanes, SUPERTHERM ® cures out completely in 14 – 21 days to an extremely tough, durable, non-yellowing, water resistant coating that also provides flexibility, water proofing and UV stability. SUPERTHERM ® has passed 2000 hours of salt spray testing which equals marine specifications and in fact has DNV certification. SUPERTHERM ® was built to meet the requirements of industrial uses which required a tough surface, and provide flexibility against stresses of contraction and expansion. Also, unlike all other “reflective” paints on the market which offer only a single reflective ceramic to provide heat reflection, SUPERTHERM ® is designed with four separate ceramic compounds for insulation from radiant heat, reflection, conduction and convection. SUPERTHERM ® ceramics are not the rough multifaceted type as the one found in other coatings, SUPERTHERM ® ceramics are ground to form microscopic spheres. The spherical shape permits the 4 types of ceramics to settle very tight together, not allowing air to interact between the ceramics; thus “plating”. SUPERTHERM ® multi~ceramic insulation coating blocks 96% of the three sources of heat – visual light, ultra violet rays and infrared rays.


Therefore, SUPERTHERM ® is a true ” insulating ” coating and not just a reflective paint as are all the competing formulas in the market. Also tested by the Thermo Physical Research Laboratory for comparative R19 equivalent insulation factor SUPERTHERM ® blocked 92% of the heat. No other R19 equivalent insulator can claim that!. No Fiberglass, No Foam, No Cellulose, No other single ceramic paint!

~ Two ceramic compounds are primarily to repel radiation and offer reflective abilities. These two ceramics repel better than 95% of the sunlight and radiant heat ( short wave ).

~ The third ceramic compound is to stop 92% heat and / or cold conduction by hollow sphere technology which is not glass.

~ The fourth ceramic compound is designed specifically for stopping infrared radiated heat. This ceramic blocks 99.5% of Infrared Radiation ( long wave ) to control the heat gain or loss to the envelope of buildings or equipment. This new compound was introduced in February 2000 as part of our continued research in controlling heat transfer.

~ The combination of acrylics provide elasticity and adhesion while the urethane adds toughness, binds the acrylics and compounds and also provides a moisture barrier. The fourth resin additive is what makes the complete resin blend to combine into a single component and extends the life of the coating. This resin / ceramic combination has been shown to repel both heat and fire, withstand elements for 30 to 40 years, endure 180 degree bend without cracking, resist water, acid rain and ultraviolet light. SUPERTHERM ® is a permanently flexible “breathable” membrane that stops water penetration and prevents corrosion and surface deterioration.

Toilet waste is over 90% water content. Sun-Mar evaporates this liquid and carries it back to the atmosphere via the vent system. Depending on the model, a Sun-Mar can evaporate up to 2 gallons per day. That’s a lot, when you consider there is no flushing water to bother with. Saving Water


Water is our most valuable resource, and in many places it’s getting scarce. So scarce that we can’t afford to be flushing it down the toilet. Because many Sun-Mar models use no water at all, a Sun-Mar saves a huge amount of water.

A four-person household using a traditional 3.5 gallon flush toilet will flush some 70 gallons per day down the toilet. This works out to an annual volume of over 25,000 gallons per year. So far we calculate that based on our mix of residential and seasonally used units, Sun-Mar has saved a massive 3.2 billion gallons of water up to January 2008, a figure that is increasing by an amazing 6,103 gallons each and every minute.

Recycling Nutrients

Waste is mostly made up of moisture, and complex organic molecules. These molecules contain plenty of carbon and hydrogen atoms. In a Sun-Mar, aerobic bacteria work to break these molecules down by converting the hydrogen to water and the carbon to carbon dioxide. Both are vented to atmosphere along with the moisture.

The small amount of remaining materials are largely oxidized salts which are collected by a Sun-Mar in the finishing drawer.

This is a valuable resource which is ideally suited for uptake by plants, and constitutes less than 3% of the original volume of the waste.

By recycling in this way Sun-Mar returns the nutrients to the plants they came from.

The Water Mill

What is the WaterMill?

Technically speaking, the WaterMill is an atmospheric water collection device that condenses water vapor and purifies it. In English: It’s a home appliance that makes drinking water for your whole family – using only air.

Here’s how it works:
